THE NATIONAL JAZZ MUSEUM IN HARLEM PRESENTS:
"JAZZ & THE CREATIVE INFLUENCE OF ISLAM:
LIVING LEGACY: DR YUSUF A LATEEF’S AUTOPHYSIOPSYCHIC MUSIC"

Join us for a conversation with LuFuki, Sister Ayesha Lateef, and Dr. Adam Zanolini on Dr. Yusef A Lateef’s Autophysiopsychic Music. Dr Yusuf A Lateef was not only a celebrated musician and composer but also an educator, author and visual artist. Dr Lateef developed the term and theory behind Autophysiopsychic Music, a form of music that comes from the mind, body and spirit. Though this work as well as his exploration of science fiction and afrofuturism have not been broadly studied, his legacy continues on through his family and musicians dedicated to exploring his methodology. This session explores the work being done to keep this legacy alive. (video on youtube.)

VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY'S HEARD LIBRARIES ACQUIRE COLLECTION OF JAZZ, WORLD MUSIC MASTER YUSEF LATEEF
Vanderbilt’s Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries are now home to a rich collection of research materials from the life and career of Yusef A. Lateef, a Grammy-winning musician who played a pioneering role in bringing Middle Eastern and Asian sounds to American jazz. Lateef also was an author, visual artist, educator and philosopher. He died in 2013, but his cultural significance lives on through his artistry.
